John Bertalan, Ed.D. Professor of Politcal Science at Dale Mabry Campus, published a supplemental textbook entitled A Brief Introduction to American Government for Pearson/Longman this past fall. Just recently he published "The Rewards of Teaching Diversity" in the Spring 2003 issue of Diversity Education Magazine. Upon his return home from an FSPD sponsored trip to Slovenia last summer, he published two articles in a Slovene-German-Austrian -American Heritage Periodical and presented a faculty in-service workshop at the beginning of the Spring Term.


Hugh Hickman, Ph.D. physics Professor at the Dale Mabry Campus, is a widely published scientist, with thirty-two HCC students appearing as co-authors on his scientific journal articles and conference papers. His students have twice won best paper at the annual meeting of the Florida Academy of Sciences, and in 2000 they received an Honorable Mention. Other students have won research internships at Lawrence Livermore, Stanford, and Oak Ridge. In 1999, HCC nominated Hugh for the White House award for best science teacher in America.

In 2000, he received a brief mention in the Cambridge, England anthology, 2000 Outstanding Scientists of the 20th Century.

Hugh has served his colleagues as FUSA Council member, Tenure Committee member, and as a member of the FUSA Bargaining Team.


Liana Fox, Ph.D., mathematics Professor at the Ybor City Campus, is currently serving as treasurer for Bill McBride's gubernatorial campaign. As a devoted USF Alumni, she serves as a board member of the USF Latin Community Advisory Committee and a board member of the United Way of Hillsborough County. She serves on the Mayor's Hispanic Advisory Committee for Tampa and is an active member and past president of League of Women Voters of Hillsborough County.

This past year, she has served as board member on Speak Up Tampa Bay and as facilitator for the Reubin Askew Institute at the University of Florida. In 2000 she was awarded the USF Don Gifford Alumni Service Award, and in 1999 the National Conference for Community and Justice Silver Medallion Humanitarian Award.

She chaired the College's Academic Affairs Committee for the past two years and has recently served as Faculty-Chair of the College's newly formed Student Placement, Retention, and Success Committee. She appears regularly on a local television mathematics program.
